This common approach coordinates programs and services that are currently funded separately by Alberta Education, which provides public and private schools with funding for Early Childhood Services (ECS) programs through Program Unit Funding (PUF); and Human Services, which provides families with specialized services through Family Support for Children with Disabilities (FSCD).This Provincial Protocol Framework presented a guide for the development and delivery of a common approach to provide families with a single, coordinated plan implemented by a single service team to ensure continuity and consistency of approach across all settings (home, ECS program, and community).

Roots of Empathy and Seeds of Empathy are promoted as preventative programs designed to build social and emotional competence in preschool and school age children up to Grade 8. Susan Abells provided writing and editing services to prepare the final report on this evaluation project conducted by Dr. Jane Hewes and Dr. Sherrill Brown from Grant MacEwan University and Dr. Cathy Smey Carston and Dr. Joanne Baxter from Mount Royal University. The final report summarizes key findings, conclusions and recommendations from the literature review and data collected through an online survey and focus groups sessions with program participants.
